How Smart TV-Based Learning Is Revolutionising Rural Education

In rural India, 95% of children aged 5-14 are enrolled in schools, but only 73% of grade 8 students can read a grade 2-level text.
This vast gap highlights that access to education alone is insufficient. The lack of quality education has hindered the progress of rural communities, leaving children unequipped to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Compared to their urban peers, they face significant disadvantages, making improving their quality of life and securing a brighter future challenging.
Why Is There a Need For Solutions like Smart TVs?
Imagine a rural classroom. The tools you imagine are often too outdated to impact kids in the long run. Due to this lack of infrastructure, inefficient teaching methods and a shortage of trained teachers, children miss out on a proper learning experience. Something as crucial as government-approved SCERT-based learning material may not be available. The only way to address such issues is an innovation that can be affordable and practical. With this need in mind, various NGOs have established unique and frugal teaching methods. One such transformative step is our six innovations, a blend of innovative technology and impactful teaching aids, including a Smart TV.
Smart TVs Creating an Engaging Learning Environment
Smart TVs allow students to listen and see the concepts, creating a more interactive and engaging learning experience. They ensure children understand and retain concepts in ways traditional methods like blackboards may not. For instance, learning about the solar system through an audiovisual medium can significantly improve students' understanding and retention compared to simply viewing a textbook diagram. Our belief has only been validated as one of our students shared how learning is now their favourite part of the day as it is more fun!
Smart TVs’ Impact on Teachers
Behind every child's success is an empowered teacher. However, in rural areas, teachers regularly face challenges like excessive workloads, lack of training, and large classroom sizes. Approximately 1.2 lakh schools face the worst of this situation as there is just one teacher in each one. In such cases, Smart TVs offer valuable support, making tools like Sampark's Smart TV a crucial necessity.
Keeping this in mind, we have created 31,000 Sampark TV classrooms to address this need, giving 3.34 lakh teachers more time to pay attention to students. This has been a significant help in lesson planning, as it reduces the time taken to do it by almost 50%. All this while improving engagement rates and academic scores.
