India’s Right to Education Act, introduced in 2009, makes school free and compulsory for all children aged 6 to 14. It’s a key step to ensure every child gets a fair chance to learn and grow. But, education being so important, why was there still a need for a law to achieve this target?
What should be one word that describes a classroom learning environment? We will go forward and say ‘interactive’. When children interact, they don’t just attend class; they learn in a way that stays with them for a longer duration. That is exactly what education is aimed at: creating a life-long foundation of literacy, knowledge, and crucial mental abilities like critical thinking, adaptability, etc. Hence, the presence of interactive teaching and learning methods shall be given priority.
Education should encourage critical thinking and make students come out with innovative solutions”- Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, former vice president of India. This thought is echoed in international bodies like UNESCO as it states how quality education includes critical thinking as one of the eight cross-cutting competencies for sustainable development.
